The library of Tomsk Polytechnic University was established back in 1900. For more than 100 years it has become one of the best national engineering libraries, granting access to its reach collection to both students and staff members of TPU and Tomsk citizens.

In 1988, the library was named after Professor Vladimir A. Obruchev. He was a man of many talents - a famous geologist, studying Siberian, a founder of a Siberian school of geology, an author of sci-fi works, the first dean of the TPU Division for Geology, and the twice chairperson of the library commission. He made a considerable contribution to the development of the library.

The collection of rare books and manuscripts is a unique part of the library. There are priceless book of 16-19 centuries, such as the volumes of the Imperial Academy of Sciences of the 18th century, the personal library of S.N. Kulibin a famous Russian mining and petroleum engineer,  lifetime books and publication of M.V. Lomonosov (Russian researcher, chemists, physicist, mathematician, writer, philosopher, and a brilliant researcher), and other researchers S.P. Krasheninnikova, L. Euler, K.F. Gauss, J.L. Langraz. Among the library collection, there is a book of German mining master and metallurgist Lazar Erker Description of All the Most Important Ore and Mining Productions, published in 1580. This book is a typical example of book art of the late 16th century and is one of the pearls of the library collection. In addition, there are books with dedicatory inscriptions of the famous graduates, like discoverer of the Norilsk ores N.I. Urvantsev, designer, and creator of the Ostankino television tower N.V. Nikitin, sci-fi writer A.P. Kazantsev, and many others.

By the way, among the library staff, there is Vasilii the Cat, who is a full right member of the library staff. He is cat-therapist and learning-motivation officer, assisting students and the library visitors with stresses from long cramming and reading. He is open-hearted and always ready to consult you about motivation and provide with emotional support, of course, if he is not sleeping somewhere on the windowsill or central-heating battery.

The library collection includes 2,5 mln. publications and books in engineering, natural science, social and humanitarian sciences. In addition, the collection includes scientific and education literature, including periodicals, electronic and hardcover information and abstract journals, dissertations and abstracts, normative-and-technical and patent documentation, rare books, and manuscripts. The collection of fiction literature includes 50 thousand of Russian and foreign books and publications.

The University students and staff members have access to the library electronic resources through the library computers, free wi-fi, or even work with the resources from home. It is about 1 mln. publications, among them there are 50 thousand full text and bibliographic databases.

The library provides readers with access to Scopus and Web of Science, and many other paper, thesis, and dissertation databases.

It is worth mentioning, that the library is free for all, regardless of whether they are registered users or not.

The first thing visitors meet with is the Contact Point, an information service tell about the library services and collection, and helps to make collection and resources map for work.

The reading rooms are spaces for independent work. Each room offers comfortable conditions for training, the visitors can apply for consultant help.

The reading rooms of engineering, humanitarian and foreign literature allow working with freely available paper books, journals, reference and information materials. To study various foreign languages there are 18 thousand publications, including sets of authentic literature and audio-video materials of famous world publishers.

The reading room of periodicals provides access to 500 periodical literature and publications.   

The reading room of term work and thesis development includes a solid collection of methodological documentation and 60 automated workplaces with software for research and designing tasks. It is individual and group workplaces with sets of modern equipment for designing, drawing, printing of drafts and blueprints and other technical documentation for dissertations and term works.

The library is a member of NEIC (the National Economic Information Consortium) and ARLC (the Associated Regional Library Consortia), this allows students and staff members enjoy a large number of electronic resources of consortia for free.

In addition to its classical responsibilities, the library conducts information support of scientific, educational, research and self-educational processes, and organizes cultural and leisure activities. There are nine clubs, such as the Movie Club Bardo, the Literature Club – Awaiting Cafeka, the English Speaking Club – Friday Point, The Chinese Culture Club, the Contemporary-XXI Club, the Jazz Club, and others. The library strives to become a venue for students and staff members. They regularly hold photography and painting exhibitions.

Above all, the library pays attention to accessibility for people with disabilities. It has special transition route for physically challenged citizens and comfortable workplaces. In addition, there are audiobooks and special software, allowing synthesizing audio-read of the printed books.
