The StrAU Industrial Tomography is aimed at development and production of small-sized cyclic electron accelerators - betatrons. Along with this, it is engaged in the design of industrial tomographic complexes for cargo inspection and control of large and complex objects of petroleum, metallurgical and aerospace industries, and military equipment. The University conducts an original Master degree program in Tomographic NDT of Complex Systems under the StrAU.

The main areas of research and engineering projects:

  • Development of new types of cyclic induction accelerators;
  • Creation of hardware-software complexes for thermal monitoring;
  • Development of technologies for diagnosis and assessment of the residual life of containers with spent nuclear fuel based on a method of ultrasonic tomography;
  • New technologies and complexes of tomographic non-destructive testing.


Expected results of the StrAU:

  • Training of world-class specialists in the area of industrial tomography of complex systems;
  • Development of a new generation of industrial tomographic complexes for cargo inspection, control of large and complex objects of aerospace and military equipment, petroleum and metallurgy industries;
  • Development of a line of new betatrons.


Results achieved in 2016:

  • Developed X-ray tomography for large-sized objects with a resolution of 100 microns. It should be mentioned, that the StrAU has already concluded a number of agreements with leading national companies (Gazprom and Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation) and international companies and corporations (Deal Technologies GmbH, Innotech Systems Pvt. Ltd., Powerscan Company Limited, JME Ltd, Pan Asiatic Technologies Sdn. Bhd, Smiths Heimann GmbH, and United Pioneer Technology Co., Ltd).
  • Developed a system of Machine Vision of ultrasound tomography. The present system allows identifying unknown objects with a resolution of 200 microns and transfer of this data to a 3D model. It was tested on composite structural materials of the Russian Helicopters Holding products.
  • Developed a method of dynamic thermal tomography, which provides effective non-destructive control of aviation and space materials by a method of active quantitative infrared thermography (AQIRT).
  • Developed a thermal control complex Thermoscope-K for testing carbon-carbon composites.
  • In collaboration with Power Scan (China) developed a betatron radiator for use in prospective inspection systems and designed a dual-energy detection technology using small betatrons.
  • Developed a combined method for detecting defects in carbon composites using laser vibrometry, low-power ultrasonic stimulation, and infrared thermography.
  • Conducted field tests of hardware and software elements of thermal tomography on carbon-carbon composite materials within the framework of contracts with Soluterm Ltd. (the official representative of Airbus Corporation in Russia) and OJSC Composite.
  • By order of Innotech Systems Pvt. (India) the StrAU team developed a new betatron SEA-7 for non-stationary X-ray inspection of welded joints at construction sites, stockpiles, in the repair of power equipment, control of large-sized casting, and etc.
  • Developed an ultrasonic flaw detector for control of defects in complex composite materials. The industrial prototype of the device has been recently installed in a Vietnamese factory of HSTM Vietnam Construction consulting company.
