A new global university ranking Moscow International University Ranking The Three University Missions compiled in Russia has been released. Tomsk Polytechnic University is 136th in the overall table and 7th among Russian universities.
The ranking was initiated by the Russian Union of Rectors in accordance with the instructions of the President of Russia. As the creators of the ranking note, this is a fundamentally new academic ranking, the first to evaluate all three key university missions: education, research, and interaction with society. The initiative of creating the ranking was supported by leading universities of Russia, China, India, Iran, Japan, and Turkey.
The main difference compared to the previous ranking system is the calculation procedure based on the objective data, but not on the subjective reputation surveys.
Among ranking indicators, there are Wins in international student contests by students, University budget to student ratio, Student to academic staff ratio, REG List awards won by university academic staff and alumni, University’s online courses published on the biggest global online platforms, University’s Twitter account followers. The share of international students was also taken into account; Tomsk Polytechnic University traditionally takes the leading positions against this indicator in Russia. The University international academic environment has been developed for many years and currently, young people from 37 countries are students of TPU.
Great attention was paid to the citation of universities. Development of this direction is closely connected with the development of scientific cooperation. At present, TPU scientists are conducting research together with colleagues from world’s leading scientific centers. The University is an active participant of six collaborations at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) and takes part in the upgrade of detectors of the Large Hadron Collider. TPU scientists study physics of extreme states of matter, in particular, the processes of ignition and combustion of fuels. TPU scientists conduct large-scale research of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf as a source of greenhouse gases of planetary significance.
In addition, the ranking also evaluates research income. The University successfully implements projects with the largest companies of the country such as Rosatom, Gazprom, Roscosmos, and so on.
The short list of the ranking includes 338 universities from 80 countries of the world. Top positions are held by Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.
