On Monday, Rector of Tomsk Polytechnic University Petr Chubik and Rector of Siberian State Medical University Olga Kobyakova signed an agreement on the establishment of an interdisciplinary scientific and educational center for medical engineering and research. The center is intended to unite researchers from the two universities and to assist in implementing joint scientific projects.
The center will operate at existing sites of the universities.
‘The connection between medicine and engineering became so close that it is difficult to imagine any breakthrough without one another. And we are lucky that in Tomsk, literally next door, there are two strong universities. TPU and SSMU have a perfect history of cooperation both in education and science. The center will work primary to support the research projects.
At the beginning, we identified four main directions. These are IT in medicine, biomedical technology, i.e. everything related to the development of drugs for diagnosis and treatment, medical materials science and medical instrument making,’
- said TPU Rector Petr Chubik at the signing ceremony.
SSMU Rector Olga Kobyakova noted that the universities’ administration will have to develop a motivation system for scientists and students implementing joint projects.
‘The medical engineering center will operate as a construction kit when scientists and students from our universities or even from other universities get together to solve a certain problem, to complement each other with their competences and resources and eventually to successfully implement a project.
Then teams regroup depending on the goals of new projects. We have already successful examples of teamwork; in particular, we continue cooperation in the field of Big Data. Currently, this is a groundbreaking direction in the world. As the first base medical university we provide task setting, the interpretation of demographic and medical indicators of the region, specialists at Tomsk Polytechnic University carry out the analysis of these data sets,’ – noted Olga Kobyakova.
The agreement implies that TPU and SSMU professors will jointly supervise PhD students pursuing academic programs. The parties expect to conduct joint research, development and technological work in the domains of common interest, as well as to prepare joint proposals and projects to international and Russian research foundations. It is planned to invite leading foreign scientists and experts to conduct scientific research, to deliver lectures and to implement network interaction with world’s leading scientific and educational centers and companies. There will be practical implementation of outcomes of joint scientific research. It is supposed to involve students, PhD students and young scientists into the research and innovative activities by organizing olympiads in specific subject areas, competitions, conferences and other events.
The agreement was signed in the framework of the 15th Youth and Modern Information Technologies Conference for Students, PhD Students and Young Scientists. One of the conference sessions was devoted to IT in humanities and medical research.
