Tomsk Polytechnic University and the System Operator of the Unified Energy System have launched a new educational project to train IT specialists for energy. The development of the new educational project was driven by a new challenge, i.e. the need to enhance IT knowledge among specialists of the System Operator’s technological unit, in fact, of the heart of the Russia’s energy system.

The project is designed as a double degree master program when students simultaneously pursue two programs Control Modes of Electric Power System and IT for Electric Power Industry. Upon completion, the graduates will receive two diplomas.

Thus, young power engineers graduated from the joint program become versatile specialists, equally possessing knowledge in electric power engineering and information technology. These specialists will be better prepared to solve problems at the intersection of dispatching and IT. In addition, the graduates of the project will get more employment opportunities and career promotion in the System Operator.

The joint project of SO EPS and TPU was presented at the roundtable discussion devoted to the Dialogue between Enterprises and Universities in Siberia. Who is Capable of Doing What in the framework of the Siberian Energy Forum in Krasnoyarsk. The participants of the forum were told the experience in training of specialists in power engineering on dedicated master programs implemented jointly with Tomsk Polytechnic University.

CEO of the United Dispatcher Administration of Energy System in Siberia (UDA Siberia), a subsidiary of the System Operator of the United Energy System, Alexei Khlebov told about the training of specialists possessing the necessary skills and competences to work for the System Operator. He noted that the SO UES jointly with Nadezhnaya Smena Foundation has been implementing a long-term program for youth education to work in power industry School-University-Enterprise for over 10 years. The concept of continuous training of specialists, designed by the System Operator in 2007, meets the challenges of time and, first of all, closes a gap between a basic university education and requirements of the SO UES professional standards.

The company-specific task requires the highest level of reliability and stability of energy operational and dispatching control, as well as a unique set of competences among its staff, which makes it difficult to find ready-to-work specialists.

The participants of the roundtable were presented the experience of the UDA Siberia SO UES and the TPU School of Energy & Power Engineering in the implementation of the master program.

The program specially designed by Tomsk Polytechnic University with the participation of the SO UES technological unit includes lectures, practical and laboratory classes, as well as internships at the System Operator subsidiaries.

The enterprise’s experts are involved in the educational process. They deliver lectures, conduct practical classes, supervise graduate projects and internships and are part of the State Attestation Commission.
