The Laboratory of Hybrid Biomaterials of Tomsk Polytechnic University invites TPU students, including international ones, as well as master students and postgraduates for research collaboration.  The research team of the laboratory supervised by associate professor of the Department of Experimental Physics Sergey Tverdokhlebov deals with design of new materials and coatings for implantology.

The research team of the Laboratory of Hybrid Biomaterials, functioning on the basis of the Department of Experimental Physics (Institute of Physics and Technology), designs technologies to obtain materials and articles for sparing regenerative medicine. The scientists design coatings and materials identical to human bones which are not rejected by the body and help damaged bone tissue to recover as soon as possible.

So far, the laboratory managed to achieve considerable results, namely, the designed biodegradable materials already pass the necessary clinical trials. Some developments of TPU scientists undergo preclinical tests, while others are being successfully applied in veterinary medicine. For instance, implants with innovative coatings were successfully implanted to two cats Thomas and Kutuzov in the BEST Novosibirsk Veterinary Clinic. Besides, the research team is engaged in 3d printing of artificial bones, designs new materials for organs and tissue culture, develops methods of precise drug delivery via implants. The list of TPU research team achievements could go on.

The laboratory also deals with mathematical modeling of drug release; coating deposition on metal implants (hybrid calcium phosphate coatings, bioinert and biodegradable polymer coatings, composite coatings); surface modification of polymer coatings and implants (both chemical and physical modification); development of new medical agents via computer modeling.

“We have enough work for everyone. We work in various research fields. It’s not a big deal if you are a fist-tear student; you have to start your professional life with something. I personally joined the laboratory when I was a first-year student and gradually got involved into science,

- says head of the laboratory Sergey Tverdokhlebov. – Certainly, we distribute tasks according to individual abilities and skills. We also consider the research interest of every student and try to meet his or her expectations.”

Mr. Tverdokhlebov points out that during the last academic year there were approximately 25 students, master students and postgraduates working at the laboratory.
